Releasing Monarchs

This is one of the last batches of monarchs we released, this year. They will be migrating down to Mexico to overwinter. Those that survive the long trip, as well as the winter months, will begin to head back north. Along the way, they will mate, lay eggs, and die. Their offspring will be the ones that continue the journey north. --LKR

The goldenrod is beautiful, and so are the butterflies!

Thanks, Carla! I miss them and can't wait for their return--both the butterflies *and* the flowers!!! :-)

When will the monarchs be back?

It's different for every area, and largely depends on the weather and growing conditions of Milkweed, their host plants. Go to Journey North Migration @: http://www.learner.org/jnorth/maps/monarch_spring2009.html
It's funny--they seem to be coming up north faster in the midwest than on the east coast, this year. Don't remember that as being the norm. Will have to compare with older maps!

Hope this helps! :-)
